A JOURNEY THROUGH SCOTLAND BY LAND AND PRIVATE SHIP

Celtic Christianity:
Walking with God in the Thin Places of Scotland

September 25 to October 5, 2026

You are invited to join The Very Rev. Heidi Kinner in Scotland to continue exploring the significant moments and places of our faith. We’ll delve into the spread of Christianity from the Holy Land to Scotland. We’ll explore Celtic Christianity, the remarkable expression of the faith in the vernacular of the Celts, and consider its relevance and potential blessings for us today. We’ll visit early monastic sites, medieval churches, and sites known as “Thin Places”—the places where the veil between the material world and the spiritual world is especially porous. This allows for a deeper and more profound sense of God's presence in the everyday. We will learn about the events and people who shaped the Reformation in Scotland and influenced the development of the church in the United States during the Revolutionary period. My hope for this trip is not only to gain knowledge about the facts, figures, and geography of Celtic Christianity, but also to nurture a more profound love for God amidst the beauty and silence of Scotland as we tread in the footsteps of the Celtic saints.

With only 19 cabins, you are invited to join a congenial group of like-minded souls who come together to experience the magic and wonder of this extraordinary journey.

Day 1: September 25, 2026 | Arrive in Edinburgh
Evening Private Visit to The Palace of Holyroodhouse and Abbey

All guests will be met and transferred to The Caledonian Hotel upon arrival in Edinburgh. Superbly located in Edinburgh’s historic city centre, our Princes Street hotel looks onto Edinburgh Castle. With beautiful views of Edinburgh Castle and the city, this luxuriously ornate hotel is the perfect place to call home while exploring Edinburgh and its surroundings. Built in 1903, it is a well-established icon on Princes Street. It is within easy walking distance of key landmarks, including the castle, the Royal Mile, and Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This afternoon, we’ll enjoy a walking tour of the neighborhood with our Scottish Guide.

This evening, we gather for tea, sandwiches, and prosecco before our private evening visit to The Abbey and Palace of Holyroodhouse. Our special tour of Scotland’s official residence of The King highlights Holyrood’s dramatic past and the Palace’s essential role today. We will enjoy a private tour of the State Apartments after the Palace is closed to visitors for the day. Our private tour offers a unique opportunity to go behind the ropes in selected rooms and into the West Drawing Room, which members of the Royal Family use as a private sitting room and is not normally open to the public. It is among the most beautiful rooms in the palace and boasts one of the finest 17th-century plasterwork ceilings.

Holyrood Abbey was founded in 1128 by King David I of Scotland. A medieval legend recounts that David was saved from a charging stag that was startled by a crucifix ("Holy Rood") that appeared between its antlers. In thanks, he built the Augustinian abbey on that very spot.

Day 2: September 26, 2026
The Holy Isle of Lindisfarne and Durham Cathedral

Today, we embark on a journey following the paths of St. Aidan and St. Cuthbert to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where Aidan established a missionary base in 635 AD. He was summoned by the King of Northumbria from Iona in western Scotland to introduce Celtic Christianity to northern England.

Lindisfarne is considered one of the "thin places" of the Christian world, where the boundaries between heaven and earth appear to converge. Years after Aidan's passing, St. Cuthbert assumed the role of abbot within the community, which subsequently produced the remarkable "Lindisfarne Gospels" (currently housed in the British Library) in his honor. Although St. Mary's Priory was destroyed during the Reformation, its ruins serve as a poignant reminder of centuries of devotion at this sacred site.

In the afternoon, our journey will continue along the route of the Protected Journey to Durham Cathedral. The cathedral's genesis is inextricably linked to the exodus of a group of monks who, in the 9th century, fled their monastery on Lindisfarne, fearing Viking incursions, and carrying the remains of St. Cuthbert with them. Legend posits that the monks were divinely guided to Durham by a vision, where the coffin became immovably fixed, signifying the saint's desire for his final resting place there.

Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is widely recognized as the preeminent example of Norman architecture in England. Its pioneering architectural innovations profoundly influenced the subsequent evolution of Gothic architecture. The Cathedral is celebrated for its breathtaking beauty, architectural ingenuity, and its significant connection to St. Cuthbert, whose shrine it reverently houses.

We will return to Edinburgh and our accommodation, the Caledonian Hotel, late in the afternoon. Guests are at liberty to make their own arrangements for dinner this evening.

Day 3: September 27, 2026
St. Cuthbert's, Greyfriars, and St. Giles, and Private Reception and Dinner aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia

Following a delightful breakfast at the Caledonian, we shall proceed to morning Eucharist at The Parish Church of St Cuthbert's. This historic Church of Scotland congregation, situated in central Edinburgh within a large churchyard at the foot of Castle Rock, boasts a Baroque and Renaissance edifice completed in 1894. The site is widely regarded as Edinburgh's oldest place of Christian worship, potentially established by St. Cuthbert in the 7th century. Subsequently, we will continue to Greyfriars in Edinburgh, which encompasses both the Kirk (church) and Kirkyard (graveyard). Its history, commencing in the 16th century, is replete with religious upheaval, conflict, legendary narratives, and literary associations.

Our itinerary concludes with a visit to St Giles' Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh. This magnificent medieval church and prominent landmark, situated on the historic Royal Mile, boasts a history spanning over 900 years and is inextricably linked to significant events and figures in Scottish history.

This evening, we are honored to commence with a red carpet arrival, where we will be welcomed aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia via the Royal Brow, an entrance previously reserved for Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family. A private guided tour of this iconic vessel awaits, encompassing the Admiral’s Cabin and the exquisite State Apartments, as featured in The Crown. Dinner will be served in the elegant State Dining Room, where Her Majesty entertained royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities from across the globe.

Day 4: September 28, 2026
Edinburgh to Inverness via train, Cawdor Castle and Gardens, The Bronze Age Site of Clava Cairns, embarking on the Lord of the Highlands

This morning, luggage will be transferred by coach to our privately chartered 38-passenger Lord of the Highlands.

The journey from Edinburgh to Inverness by train is recognized as one of the world's most scenic routes. This train ride is celebrated for its breathtaking vistas, particularly as it navigates the Scottish Highlands, offering unparalleled views of mountains, lochs, and picturesque landscapes.

Upon arrival in Inverness, we will partake in lunch and a curated tour of Cawdor Castle and Gardens. The Thanes of Cawdor have occupied this estate, situated along the River Findhorn, since the 12th century. The family is famously, albeit fictitiously, linked to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a work that immortalized the title in dramatic tradition. This ancient castle, continuously inhabited by the Cawdor family, has undergone development over 600 years and is furnished with exquisite portraits, tapestries, and items of historical significance.

Cawdor features three distinct gardens, each possessing a unique identity and character. Successive generations of owners have expanded and refined the gardens to encompass a Walled Garden, a Flower Garden, and a Wild Garden, all of which will be explored during our visit.

The Bronze Age Site of Clava Cairns
The Clava Cairns are a Sacred Site. This landscape served as a pivotal location for ritualistic and burial activities during the Bronze Age. Subsequent burials at the site suggest its continued importance for over a millennium. . For enthusiasts of "Outlander," the site provided inspiration for author Diana Gabaldon and the character Claire Randall, who found herself transported to the 1740s, where she encountered and fell in love with the Highlander Jamie Fraser.

Subsequently, we will board the Lord of the Highlands, which will serve as our country home for the ensuing seven nights.

Day 5: September 29, 2026
Culloden Moor and the Jacobite Uprising and Old High Church | Lochness

This morning, our notable Scottish National Trust historian will lead us through the rich history of Culloden Moor, the poignant site of the Jacobite uprising in 1746. As we walk the hallowed ground, our historian will paint a vivid picture of the events leading up to the battle, the key figures involved, and the devastating consequences that forever altered the course of Scottish history. We will learn about the strategic decisions, the bravery of the Jacobite forces, and the overwhelming might of the British army, gaining a deeper understanding of this pivotal moment.

Our journey through history continues with a visit to the Old High Church, the oldest church in Inverness, Scotland. Tradition holds that the Irish missionary St. Columba preached on the hill known as St. Michael's Mount around 565 AD, laying the earliest Christian foundation for the site. In a grim chapter of its history, following the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the church tower was infamously used to imprison Jacobite soldiers.

Following our morning of historical immersion, we return to the ship for a delightful lunch as we embark on a scenic sail through the legendary Loch Ness in the afternoon.

The sheer scale of Loch Ness is breathtaking; its deep, mysterious waters and the majestic surrounding mountains inspire a profound sense of awe and wonder. This serene environment can evoke a deep sense of peace and a powerful connection to nature's grandeur. And of course, no journey on Loch Ness would be complete without acknowledging the enduring legend of the Loch Ness monster. While belief in Nessie may vary, the tale itself fuels imagination and adds an irresistible sense of mystery to the already enchanting waters, making our sail a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 6: September 30, 2026
A Day of Tranquility and Discovery on the Caledonian Canal

Today promises a serene and enlightening experience as we embark on a journey along the historic Caledonian Canal. Stretching for nearly 100 kilometers (60 miles), this remarkable feat of engineering serves as a vital link between the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. More than just a waterway, it’s a captivating passage through Scotland's rich tapestry of history, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture.

The Caledonian Canal dramatically bisects the majestic Scottish Highlands, extending from Fort William in the southwest to Inverness in the northeast. Our voyage will take us past imposing, brooding castles that stand as silent sentinels of bygone eras, and connect a series of dramatic, deep-water lochs, including the legendary Loch Ness, the serene Loch Oich, and the expansive Loch Lochy.

Chaplain Kinner will offer a teaching on early Christianity in the Celtic lands, how it borrowed and ‘baptized art, religious sites, and even festival dates from earlier Celtic traditions. We will also consider how it developed largely independent of Roman Christianity, giving it a unique expression, one that was more closely tied to the earlier Eastern traditions of Christianity.

Afternoon Exploration: Glenfinnan and Corpach
As the late afternoon sun casts long shadows, we will arrive at the magnificent Glenfinnan area, a place steeped in both natural beauty and historical significance. Here, we will explore the iconic Jacobite monument, a poignant tribute to the fallen Jacobite soldiers, and marvel at the world-renowned Glenfinnan Viaduct, an architectural masterpiece.

Guests will have the extraordinary opportunity to ride a train over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a truly unforgettable experience as we traverse 100 feet above the meandering river below. For those seeking more active pursuits, kayaking on the tranquil waters, cycling along scenic paths, or embarking on invigorating hikes that lead to breathtaking viewpoints, are available.

Our vessel will be moored this afternoon and evening at Corpach, a charming village strategically located at the very entrance of the Caledonian Canal.

Day 7: October 1, 2026
Sailing the Firth of Lorn, Oban sightseeing and Whiskey Tasting

Our visit to Oban is meticulously curated to highlight its most significant attractions and provide an authentic Scottish experience. We will explore the architectural grandeur of Saint Columba Cathedral, a striking landmark that stands as a testament to local craftsmanship and spiritual heritage. Delving into the past, we'll visit the Dunollie Museum, Castle, and Grounds, where centuries of clan history unfold amidst stunning scenery. The Oban War & Peace Museum provides a poignant glimpse into the town's role in various conflicts and its enduring spirit. For panoramic views of the town and its breathtaking surroundings, a visit to McCaig's Tower, an iconic coliseum-like structure, is essential. Of course, no trip to Scotland would be complete without experiencing a "wee dram" of whisky.

Each evening, as our vessel moors, guests are granted the freedom to immerse themselves in Oban's charming atmosphere.

For those who are interested, Chaplain Kinner will offer a teaching on the church in the late Medieval Period and the Reformation in Scotland. We will see how it was influenced by the Reformers on the Continent, and how it helped shaped both the state and the church in the United States.

Overnight aboard Lord of the Highlands.
(B,L,D)

Day 8: October 2
Iona

Iona is revered as a sacred island, often credited as the genesis of Christianity in Scotland. Our journey today on the Isle of Iona promises a profound spiritual experience, deeply rooted in Celtic Christian heritage and enveloped by breathtaking natural splendor. Many describe Iona as a "thin place," where the distinction between the physical and spiritual realms becomes remarkably subtle, fostering an unparalleled environment for prayer, introspection, and encountering the divine presence within creation.

In 565 AD, St. Columba, Iona's inaugural pilgrim, arrived from Ireland and established a monastery, which subsequently became the wellspring of Scottish Christianity. The earliest chronicles of life on Iona recount not only St. Columba's personal pilgrimage but also the narratives of travelers, both secular and monastic, who were drawn to the island and to Columba for healing and spiritual rejuvenation.

By the eleventh century, a Benedictine abbey and convent had superseded St. Columba's monastery. The religious community on Iona ascended to prominence as one of Christendom's foremost centers of learning, attracting visitors from across Europe. The monastery they founded held significant importance and influence throughout the British Isles. The historical gravity of Iona is underscored by the presence of numerous Scottish, Irish, Norwegian, and even French monarchs interred within the Abbey's cemetery. The Abbey's enduring mystique, picturesque setting, and profound historical significance collectively cultivate an atmosphere of tranquility and contemplation.

Day 9: October 3, 2026
Isle of Skye, St. Columba’s Isle (Eilean Chaluim Cille)

Our journey today traverses the breathtaking landscapes of Skye, commencing in Armadale and proceeding to Portree, culminating at St. Columba's Isle (Eilean Chaluim Cille). This ancient and historically rich site, situated near Skeabost at the head of Loch Snizort, served as a profoundly significant religious and political nexus for nearly five centuries, from 1079 to 1498, functioning as the esteemed seat of the Bishops of the Isles.

The island itself stands as a testament to its past, featuring the evocative ruins of a chapel and a sacred burial ground. Among the notable artifacts within this hallowed space is a finely carved 16th-century knight's effigy, offering a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of those who once inhabited these grounds. Once a thriving monastic settlement and a cathedral complex dedicated to St. Columba, the Irish abbot and missionary credited with propagating Christianity throughout Scotland, the remaining ruins of the chapel and other structures paint a vivid picture of the medieval monastic life that flourished here. This site stands as a crucial historical landmark, offering profound insights into the ecclesiastical and political landscape of the Hebrides during the medieval period. The serene solitude of the island, coupled with its dramatic setting amidst the stunning Skye landscape, provides a powerful and reflective experience for visitors.

Overnight aboard Lord of the Highlands.
(B,L,D)

Day 10: October 4, 2026
Attadale Estate Gardens and Eilean Donan Castle

Award-winning Attadale Estate Gardens, located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, offer a captivating blend of art, nature, and history. Transformed by owner Nicky Macpherson, it is now a painter's garden designed to frame the views of Skye and the surrounding hills. Waterfalls, Monet bridges, meconopsis, bamboo, and candelabra primula are reflected in dark pools. Sculpture lurks in unexpected places, scattered through the garden.

We will have a curated tour of the gardens, followed by tea and cake inside Attadale Estate.

Eilean Donan, or the island of Donan, is probably named after the 6th-century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan, who came to Scotland around 580 AD. Several churches are dedicated to Donan in the area, and he likely formed a small cell or community on the island during the late 7th century. Eilean Donan Castle is considered an icon among locals for its rich history and picturesque placement at the junction of three different lochs (Loch Alsh, Loch Duich, and Loch Long all meet here). The castle was initially built in the 13th century by Alexander II of Scotland to guard the area against possible Viking invasions.

Overnight aboard Lord of the Highlands.
(B,L,D)

Day 11: October 5, 2026
Kyle of Lochalsh | Disembark and transfer to Edinburgh

We will disembark the Lord of the Highlands this morning and return to Edinburgh. We will stop en route for lunch and anticipate arriving at Edinburgh airport by 2:30 PM. All departing flights this day should be planned for 5:00PM or later.

For those who wish to depart October 6, 2026, we recommend our one-night post-cruise stay, which includes one night at the Caledonian Edinburgh, with all taxes and VAT, a full Scottish breakfast, and private airport transfers the next morning.
